Sample cooking in the community Project

'Cooking From Scratch' was a typical community-based project delivered in a disadvantaged area in Bristol.

Partners:
NHS Bristol
Bristol City Council Food Safety Team Bristol

The Brief
To design and deliver courses that equipped participants to plan, shop, prepare and cook affordable healthy meals easily replicated at home.

Aims

  • Encourage teenagers and young parents to get involved in choosing, preparing and cooking balanced and affordable meals.
  • Teach a range of appropriate cooking skills to practice and achieve at home.
  • Look at the cost and content of highly processed ready meals in comparison to cooking with fresh or store-cupboard ingredients.
  • Increase awareness of different food groups and healthy eating and encourage development of a healthy attitude towards eating a balanced diet.
  • Increase awareness of food hygiene issues using the Food Standards Agency's promotion of Cleaning, Cooking, Chilling and Cross-contamination.
  • Encourage sharing of cooking skills and enjoyment gained from the courses with families/friends.

The Results
This project was so successful that additional funding was secured to roll out the model in another disadvantaged area in Bristol, and this was delivered the following year.
